We live in a time when we have ever-increasing possibilities to talk, but ever decreasing chances to have a conversation, making it a real challenge to reach an audience through poetry. Presenting poetry in the form of a book locks the words away between its covers and confines them. That is why we need new methods of telling poetry.
The DNA of Words is a series of performances in which we explore alternative ways of presenting poetry, by creating unique performances that are built around specific, custom-built instruments.
Each performance is an improvisation without the use of any prerecorded materials. We know what the story is but we don’t know how we will tell it this time. The DNA of Words series reenact poems from two poetry books; “DNA” and “In Other Words”, as well as new and yet unpublished poems by Bulgarian writer Ivanka Mogilska.

The DNA of Words for Typewriter and Electro-acoustic Trash Banjo is the 3rd piece in the DNA of Words series. It was first presented at Sfumato theatre on July 1 2012, Sofia.
In this version, we developed entirely new instrument, the Typewriter, based on the concept of discovering the DNA of words. We record and modulate poetry in real‐time using a modified mechanical typewriter and an electronic banjo created from junk-materials.

The 2nd piece in the DNA of Words series was first presented at the third Digital Arts Festival on September 15 2011 in Sofia. In this version we use a custom made glass double bass in addition to the tablet for transforming the written poetry into sound. When instruments were added not only the sound changed, the content was transformed. We discovered new connections and paths for the story.

The DNA of Words for Wacom Tablet is the 1st piece in the DNA of Words series. It was first presented on June 17 2011 at art project space The Fridge in Sofia. In the first version of the performance we record and modulate poetry in real‐time using a wacom tablet as a metaphor for creating written word.
